Murdie (Maudie) Nampijinpa Morris was born in the 1930s at Rabbit Flat, a tiny settlement in the middle of the harsh Tanami Desert, in the Northern Territory. Murdie lived a traditional indigenous lifestyle until her father started working on the Granites Goldfields. To keep her connected to the land her parents took her out into the bush in the Nyirripi area, showing her sites and teaching her the traditional ways of her country. In the early 1980s she settled in Yuendumu and worked at the Old People’s Home – a Program that cares for the elderly by helping them when they are sick and keeping them company when they are frightened during storms. She married Tiger Tjapaltjari and lived in Lajamanu until his passing, upon which she moved back to Nyirripi. She is a senior custodian and traditional owner of this land.
Murdie has been painting since 2012, when she was prompted to paint upon attending a workshop. Since then she has established an extraordinary style, using an unrestricted palette to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture. This contemporary, colourful flair has set her apart from many other artists, and she has now been recognised as a significant painter from her region. She paints her father’s Jukurrpa (Dreaming), Maliki Jukurrpa (Domestic Dog Dreaming) and Malikijarra Jukurrpa (Two Dog Dreaming). These Dreamings have been passed down through the generations and relate directly to the land, the features of the landscape and the animals and plants that inhabit it.
Murdie paints for the renowned Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu, an art centre in the Northern Territory. Here she is able to fully express her visual style with the aid of high end materials, and is promoted through this art centre in prominent galleries around the world.
