Date of Birth: 25th May 1958

Region: Yamunturrngu, Mt. Liebig / Walungurru (Kintore) NT

Language: Pintupi/Luritja

Maisie Campbell belongs to the Pintupi language group and was born in Haasts Bluff near the Mt. Liebig area, west of Alice Springs.  Attending school in Papunya where she grew up, she was taught by the famous schoolteacher Geoffrey Bardon.  As a young woman Maisie relocated to Kintore (500km west of Alice Springs) where she was married to the late Barney Campbell Tjakamarra.  Maisie now lives with her four children in the Alice Springs area.

Maisie began painting in the early 90's and her themes symbolise the Women's Ceremonies that take place in the area between Kintore and Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia.  Her dreamings, or Tjukurrpa, depict the sites associated with women's ceremonies referred to as minyma inmaku. Many of the sacred rock holes in the Kintore region remain as important ceremony sites for the Pintupi people.

Whilst clearly influenced by her husband and the dotting style adopted by many Pintupi artists, she has developed her own form of expression which is characterised by a free flowing depiction of her stories and a rapid fire approach to dotting. Maisie is imaginative in her use of colours, showing a propensity to experiment in order to achieve the effects she is seeking, yet preserving the inherent cultural integrity of her works.

Maisie is concerned with the conservation of her culture and through her vibrant paintings aims to preserve the sites and ceremonies that are part of her life.
