Polly Ngale

Known also as: Poly Ngale

Date of Birth: c.1940

Region: Utopia, NT

Language: Anmatyerre

Polly was born at Utopia, approximately 270kms north east of Alice Springs.  The widow of Ray Yeramba, she is one of the older generation of Utopian women and a senior custodian of her country, Alparra.

Polly’s painting career started in the 1970s with silk batik before she began to work with acrylics on canvas.  She shares her country and Dreamings with her sisters Kathleen Ngale and Angeline Pwerle (Ngale).

Predominantly painting Arnwekety, (conker berry or bush plum), a sweet tasting fruit, her paintings show a choice of seasonal colour palettes, often choosing red, orange and yellow to depict country.  Her work is characteristically overlaid with softer whites and hues of reds, oranges and yellows depicting bush plum through varying shades or ripening.  The vibrant yellow seeds, which are a feast for emus, are often portrayed with the fruit giving a multi-dimensional effect to her paintings.

Polly also paints Awelye, women's business and ceremonial law.

She received an honourable mention as the 2003 finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards, followed by representation at the Contemporary Art Fair, Grand Palias, Champs Elysees. She was also represented at the ‘Emily Kngwarreye and her legacy’, Hillside Forum Daikanyama, Tokyo in 2008.

Pollly’s work has been exhibited extensively both in Australia and overseas.
